Hello friends! Welcome to Plisskin's Totally Bangin' Amazeballs 90s Cinema Blog!!
A few months ago, I became inspired to watch some movies I remember from the 90s, and I decided to put them all down in blog reviews. I love films and film making, and I want to talk in detail about every movie I see, so this gives me the perfect space to do so and get it out of my system. Plus, I live in Los Angeles now, and everyone has a blog and Instagram, so why not join in the fun!
I'm a 90s kid. I was born in the early 80s, but really, I barely remember the 80s. And I was certainly not in tune with Frankie Goes to Hollywood or Top Gun when they came out. Also, side rant, I hate when these kids go "I was born in 1997. I'm a 90s kid." No you aren't. If you can barely remember the 90s, you aren't a 90s kid. Just embrace the Naughties, they weren't that bad.
In addition to the reviews, I will also talk about my memories of the movie or what I remember of it or the franchise or what was going on when the movie came out. This will kind of be like an autobiography of the era of my innocence, since most of my early memories start from 88/89 and I ended up having to kinda grow up by 99. More on that later.

I will make every effort to post here on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays with new movie reviews. I'll also try to be doing 1-2 TV show reviews a month as well, as I've always been on the opinion that you can't really talk about one without the other, even though they are different mediums.
I will also probably sometimes write about video games, music, music videos, board games, toys, social events, etc. If it happened in the 90s, I will probably talk about it here. Down the road, I will also do some occasional "Best 90s movies by this actor" or "Ranking all the 90s vampire movies" kind of lists. We all love lists, right?

If you want to know what movies I'll be talking about, it's basically everything first released between January 1, 1990 and December 31, 1999. TV shows will be mostly the same, but there were some shows released in 88 or 89 that defined the 90s (IE: Seinfeld, Baywatch, The Simpsons) and some released in 99 that I don't really count as 90s shows (IE: The Sopranos). Maybe one day I will do a Naughties blog, and talk about The Sopranos. But until then...

This is what I will be looking at, as I review these movies.
1) Is it a good movie, from a technical point of view? Is the acting and writing solid? Is it entertaining? Do they do anything cool with the sound or music or lighting or editing or blocking or etc.? Jay-Z once said "I ain't passed the bar but I know a little bit." That's me but with movies. Not a film student. Not an industry professional. But I know a little bit. Enough to sound like I know what I'm talking about.
2) Does it hold up today? Times change. Tastes change. Something groundbreaking in 1992 might be just kinda dull or boring in 2020. This is especially true of some older science fiction and horror movies.
3) While I'm not an SJW, there are some things that are just plain uncomfortable to watch today. Some movies present drugging, rape, stalking, white privilege, homophobia, transphobia, and other negatives as positive things. I'm very sex positive and enjoy edgy humor, but some things do take it too far. And I'm sorry, sometimes that ruins otherwise perfectly good movies.

4) Last, and most importantly, did I enjoy myself while watching or do I feel it was a waste of my time? Obviously this is a bit subjective, but... it's my blog!
Everything will be rated on a five star system.
5 stars - Masterpiece, stunning, should be on everyone's bucket list.
4 stars - Very good, but has some issues that prevent it from 5 stars.
3 stars - Very average, nothing terrible going on, but not great. Fans of the genre might enjoy.
2 stars - Awful or outdated, but has some good ideas or parts. Might have bad acting and writing and music but have great cinematography. Or it's really clever but it fails to live up to its ideas.
1 star - Garbage. Was trash then, still trash today.
0 stars - Gutter poop, worst of the worst, reserved for select movies so bad they personally offended me.
So I think that's it for an overview. Feel free to message me or leave a comment if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. Also feel free to follow me on Twitter and Instagram.
Up next, the first review! The movie that started me on this whole blog idea. 1991's The Addams Family. Does this supernatural spookfest manage to breathe life back into the Gothic family? Or should this franchise have been left dead and buried? Find out next time!
